^ Badminton

Badminton is easy to learn, but can be one of the fastest sports around if you want it to be! Size and strength are no particular advantage, so the sport can be enjoyed by anyone.

Playing in a club is a great way to get into the sport and meet new people - we're one of the most social clubs in town! And if you want to play competitively we enter teams into local competitions at all abilities and can find a spot for you.

So, what are you training for?

^ The Posters

If you saw our posters and are new to the sport, you might be wondering about the phrases. Well, each of these highlights a different shot. You don't need to know all of these to get going, but if you're interested here's some more info:

The aim of a net shot is to hit the shuttle from your own forecourt into the forecourt of your opponent, bringing them forward to help create space at the back.

Tip the shuttle gently over the net using your own momentum. In doubles stay close to the net, leaving your partner with the easy finish if your opponents lift!

A clear is when you hit the shuttle from the back of your court to the far end.

Get your body behind the shuttle and side on. For a defensive version you'll aim nice and high giving you time to recover. A lower more attacking clear will force your opponent to move quickly, leaving a gap up front!

The goal with a lift is to get the shuttle from your own forecourt into your oppositions rearcourt.

If you hit it over their head it should send them back and give you time to recover so is mainly a defensive shot!

The aim of a drop shot is to hit the shuttle from your back of the court so that it drops over the net in your opponents forecourt, making them move forward quickly.

A good drop will look very similar to a clear, you just slow the racket down before hitting the shuttle and hopefully catch your opponent out!

The smash is the main attacking shot in badminton and is often used to win a rally. You're aiming to hit the shuttle from high up in your mid- or rearcourt, straight down into your oppositions midcourt at high speed.

Similar to the clear again, but the shuttle is hit earlier (at a point forward from the shoulder) so that it travels downwards.

The objective of a drive is to hit the shuttle from your mid- or rearcourt into your opponents mid- or rearcourt.

Hit the shuttle early, fast and low, forcing your opponent to move quickly and reducing their attacking options.
